CARRARA AND THE WORLD OF MARBLE
The ancient Romans discovered 2000 years ago the presence of this white and shiny stone in the mountains that today we call the Apuan Alps. Rome’s imperial capital was rebuilt using the white marbles that thousands of slaves dug, worked and transported from these mountains.
After centuries of interruption the industry of extraction and processing of Carrara marble resumed in the Middle Ages thanks to the rich cities of the time such as Genoa, Pisa, Lucca, Florence. Afterwards the Rome of the Popes increased the demands and in the following centuries first the great European kingdoms, then America, and today India and China are countries where Carrara marble is exported and processed.
Throughout the centuries, artists such as Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini and with them generations of sculptors, architects, artisans used and keep on using the Carrara marbles to make statues, embellish churches, palaces and cities, making the Carrara marble the most famous in the world.
If you look closely, even in your city, there is something made of Carrara marble. If you find it, please send me a photo!
